In Zimbabwe’s one-day international World Cup Qualifier match against the United States, hitter Sean Williams hammered 174 runs off 101 balls to lead the team to a 304-run victory.
In contrast, the West Indies lost a super over to the Netherlands and now have an uphill struggle to continue in the competition.
West Indies will have zero points heading into the Super Sixes stage of the campaign and will need to win all three of their remaining games to have any hope of making it to the World Cup in India, which will begin in October. Zimbabwe and the Netherlands will each carry four points into this stage of the competition.
victors in both instances Since its inception in 1975, West Indies has participated in each and every one of its tournaments. However, given that only the top two teams from each Super Sixes group advance to the next round, it seems unlikely that they would win this year’s competition.
They scored 374 runs for six over the course of their 50 overs, but the Netherlands batsman Teja Nidamanuru scored an outstanding 111 runs off of 76 balls, which enabled the Dutch to draw the game and set up a super over.
West Indies crumbled under the mounting strain as they lost both of their wickets for a total of eight runs in the space of five balls. The Netherlands’ Logan van Beek scored 30 runs off just six deliveries bowled by Jason Holder.
In addition, the Dutch have advanced to the Super Sixes from Group A, while Sri Lanka, Scotland, and Oman have been announced as the three teams to progress from Group B.
The monumental victory margin that Zimbabwe achieved came up only a few runs short of matching the men’s one-day international record that India established in Thiruvananthapuram five months ago when they crushed Sri Lanka by 317 runs.
Williams was well assisted by opener Joylord Gumbie (78), Sikandar Raza (48), and Ryan Burl — whose 47 runs came at a strike rate of 294. When the African side was sent in to bat, they hammered their best One-Day International total of 408-6. Williams was the top scorer for the African side.
The United States were never in the hunt for the target and lost wickets at a consistent rate on their way to being bowled out for 104 in 25.1 overs, including three hilarious runouts.
Zimbabwe went through the qualifying competition’s group stage undefeated, earning victories against West Indies, the Netherlands, and Nepal along the way.
After being selected player of the match, Williams said that “we’ve found our momentum and we’re looking to carry it forward… having the crowd behind us is like having a 12th man.”
