Messi leaves door open to 2026 world cup0

Despite admitting that time is against him, Lionel Messi is not ruling out another World Cup victory with Argentina in 2026.

Messi, who recently won his ninth Ballon d’Or, raised the World Cup almost a year ago after leading Argentina to victory over France in the final in Doha.

The 36-year-old said at the time that the tournament in Qatar would be his last and that he would not be present for the following tournament, which would be co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.

But, after moving to Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami and continuing to play for the national team in 2026 qualifying, he feels the door is still open.

“I’m not thinking about the World Cup, and I’m not saying I won’t go because anything can happen.” Because of my age, the most likely scenario is that I will not be present. Then we’ll see,” Messi explained to Argentina’s Star+.

Argentina’s captain stated that his emphasis is on the Copa America, which will be held in the United States in June.

“Perhaps we’ll do well at the Copa America and everything will fall into place for us to continue.” Perhaps not. “Realistically, it’s difficult,” he remarked of the possibility of a sixth consecutive World Cup appearance.

Messi stated that he would be “the first to know when I can and cannot be there.” I’m also aware that I’ve dropped down a level. But it all comes down to the personal aspect of things, how you cope with it, and how you compete.

“I’ll do it as long as I feel well and can continue to contribute.” Today, all I can think about is making it to the Copa America. After that, only time will tell whether or not I’ll be there.

“I’m going to arrive at an age that normally disqualifies me from playing in the World Cup.” I stated that I do not anticipate attending. It appeared that I would retire after the World Cup, but that was not the case. “Now, more than ever, I want to be there,” he continued.
