After helping Paris Saint-Germain win a record 11th French title, Kylian Mbappe was elected the player of the season for Ligue 1 on Sunday. This is the fourth consecutive year that he has won this award.
The standout player for France now leads the league in scoring with 28 goals scored in league play and is on pace to finish as the top scorer in the division for the fifth season in a row.
“It’s an honor to have my name etched into the annals of our league’s history. I’ve always had the will to succeed. When he was presented with his prize, Mbappe stated, “But even with all of the ambition I have, I didn’t expect to win so quickly.”
Mbappe, who has scored 40 goals so far this season, turned down an offer to play for Real Madrid at the end of the last campaign and instead signed a new three-year contract to remain with PSG.
Reports indicate that the 24-year-old player’s contract will expire the next year unless he chooses to activate an option that allows him to continue playing until 2025.
Mbappe had the following response when asked about his future during the awards ceremony: “I will be here again next season.”
He has surpassed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has won the honor three times with Paris Saint-Germain, to become the first person to win a prize four times since it was established in 1994.
After leading Lens to second place and a return to Champions League football for the first time in twenty years, Franck Haise of Lens was awarded coach of the season after leading the team to such achievements.
The goalkeeper for Lens, Brice Samba, was also recognized, while the left defender for Paris Saint-Germain, Nuno Mendes, was given the prize for the best young player.
In addition to Mbappe and Lionel Messi, Achraf Hakimi and himself, he was one of the four players from PSG to make the team of the season.
