Maxwell clings to Test team recall hopes

Glenn Maxwell of Australia has not given up hope of playing Test cricket again, claiming that his record in the subcontinent might earn him a return for the first time in more than seven years when the team visits Sri Lanka in early 2025.

Maxwell has had a good hunting ground in the subcontinent, having played all seven of his Tests against South Asian teams.

His sole Test century came in India, and he was a key figure in Australia’s victory in the 50-over World Cup last month.

Maxwell, who has not played Test cricket since September 2017, is well aware of how difficult it is to break into Australia’s Test squad, and believes he may have to wait till the Sri Lanka visit in a little over a year.

“I have a good understanding of the current situation.” They’re playing some pretty fantastic cricket, they’re world test champs,” the all-rounder stated on Tuesday’s edition of Australian radio station SEN.

“There aren’t many Test spots available at home, but I know that when it comes to a subcontinent tour, I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side.”

“I don’t believe there will be another subcontinent tour until early 2025.” So I’ll keep working and hoping to receive an opportunity at that point.”

While Maxwell hopes to light up the Big Bash League with his explosive hitting and deft off-spin, some of his Australia teammates are gearing up for a three-Test home series against Pakistan.

“It would have been nice to play one at home, it’s where I played all my first-class cricket and it felt like I toiled away for a few years there,” said Maxwell.

“It’s something I wish I had been able to do.” However, due to conditions and timing, I was probably more desired in the white-ball area.”
