Mitchell Marsh, an all-rounder, has been given the responsibility of leading Australia in T20 competition.
“Marsh has been named as skipper for the South Africa series only,” Cricket Australia said in a statement. “With Cricket Australia yet to commit to a full-time replacement for Finch, who played his final T20 International last October,” the statement continued.
Although the allrounder, who is 31 years old and has captained the Perth Scorchers and Western Australia in the recent past, Ashton Turner, who was supported in some quarters as a likely contender for the job, has taken over those responsibilities in recent times, the allrounder does have experience in the role.
“Mitch has long been a senior player within the white-ball structure, and this opportunity affords him the chance to add to his leadership skills at an international level,” said George Bailey, who served as the selection chair. “We are looking forward to him taking that step in South Africa.”
Mitchell Marsh is the captain of the Australian Twenty20 team, which also includes Sean Abbott, Jason Behrendorff, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa.
