Wednesday, Harry Maguire, a football player for Manchester United, accepted an apology from a Ghanaian MP who made fun of him during a budget debate last year.

Isaac Adongo, a member from the opposition, said that Vice-President Mahamadu Bawumia’s handling of the country’s finances was like Maguire’s play on the ground.

Adongo said that Bawumia was like Maguire in a speech that was widely shared on social media last year. He called Maguire “the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence.”

The mention was part of a larger speech that accused Bawumia of messing up the economy and making life hard for people.

Ghana is going through its worst economic crisis in a generation. This is because of rising public debt, which has caused inflation to soar and the local currency to lose value.

When they talked about the 2024 budget on Tuesday, Adongo said Maguire had “turned the corner” and changed his mind about the comparison.

Adongo said, “I’m sorry to Harry Maguire.” “He is a transformational footballer… now scoring goals for Manchester United.”

Maguire said he was sorry in a post on X on Wednesday.

“I accept MP Isaac Adongo’s apology. In the message, he said, “See you soon at Old Trafford,” which is where Manchester United plays.

But Adongo didn’t stop criticising Bawumia. He said that Bawumia was “roaming” around the International Monetary Fund (IMF) “with a cup in hand.”

Last year, Ghana’s government asked the IMF for help. In May, the Fund accepted a $3 billion plan that would last for three years and give out $600 million right away.

Bawumia is in charge of managing the economy for the government and has been chosen as the candidate for the ruling party in the 2024 elections.
