Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a century on his first Test along with his captain and partner Rohit Sharma.
Their opening stand of 229 put India in complete control at 245 for two at tea on the second day of the first Test in Dominica on Thursday. This was in response to the low West Indies first innings score of 150.
Jaiswal, a 21-year-old left-hander, is still unbeaten on 116 as the day’s last session begins. Sharma, who had just reached his tenth Test hundred, was out on 103 when he was bowled.
Shubman Gill joined him back in the stand right away, giving the Caribbean team some satisfaction at the end of a five-hour session that didn’t lead to any progress.
At the start of the session after lunch, former leader Virat Kohli will bat with Jaiswal. India should try to get their lead closer to 200 runs by the end of the day because the pitch is getting worse quickly.
This has given the slow bowlers from the West Indies more confidence, and when Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja face the home team again in their second game, they will be an even bigger threat.
While Jaiswal and Sharma were calm in the morning, they were more upbeat in the middle of the afternoon as the West Indies struggled in the scorching heat.
Even though the slow bowlers tried their best, it was the part-timer Alick Athanaze who finally got Sharma out when he gloved an unsure forward prod and wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva ran forward to catch it.
Gill, who usually bats third, was out to Jomel Warrican’s left-arm spin. He edged a sharply turning ball to Athanaze at slip, and the Dominican continued to make news in the West Indies a day after his top score of 47 on debut.
