'it's over': sevilla players pay tribute to hermoso in rubiales battle0

Before their 2-1 La Liga loss to Girona on Saturday, Sevilla players paid respect to Jenni Hermoso, the star of the Spanish women’s squad, and the other great female footballers in the nation.

Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation, forcedly kissed Hermoso, 33, on the lips at the Women’s World Cup final medal ceremony on Sunday.

FIFA, which oversees international soccer, banned Rubiales on Saturday. On Friday, 81 Spanish players, including Hermoso, said they would not participate in national team competition as long as the present “leadership” persisted.

The term “It’s Over,” which numerous Spain women’s players and Hermoso herself had used on Friday on social media and in comments, was inscribed in Spanish on the front of the warm-up t-shirts that Sevilla players wore. This seems to be a reference to Rubiales’ rule in Spain.

Less than a week after scoring the game-winning goal against England in Sydney for La Roja, Olga Carmona watched the match from the presidential box at Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium. After the game, she learned that her father had passed away.

The Europa League champions of Jose Luis Mendilibar are now bottom of La Liga after losing their first three games.

The “We are all Jenni” banner was carried by the Cadiz players as they entered the field for their 1-1 tie with Almeria.
