Pakistan suffered a blow on Thursday when their series against Australia was called off due to fast bowler Khurram Shahzad’s ailing back after a crushing loss in the opening Test.

On his Perth debut, the 24-year-old looked impressive, finishing with match statistics of 5–128 and taking out Steve Smith twice.

However, scans revealed a torn abdominal muscle and a stress fracture in the ribs when he complained of discomfort.

The Pakistan Cricket Board released a statement saying, “PCB will now consult a specialist in Australia after which a final management protocol will be established for the player.”

“He will then return to Lahore, where he will continue his injury management and rehabilitation.”

A long-term ailment kept speedster Naseem Shah out of the tour, further weakening Pakistan’s bowling assault.

With leg discomfort, spinner Abrar Ahmed missed the Perth Test, which they lost by 360 runs. However, he may be back for the second match in Melbourne, which starts on December 26.

Pakistan has not won a Test match in Australia since 1995. Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim could be Shahzad’s replacements in the Pakistani side.
