The International Cricket Council said on Monday that it will be fining India one hundred percent of their match costs and Australia eighty percent of their match fees for sluggish over rates during the final of the World Test Championship.
Indian batsman Shubman Gill was also fined 15 percent of his match money for an outburst on social media after he was controversially caught in the match that India played at The Oval on Sunday and lost by 209 runs. The match took place on Sunday. India lost the match by 209 runs.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) stated that “after time allowances were taken into consideration, it was ruled that India were ruled to be five overs short of the target while Australia were found to be four overs short.”
Both the captain of India’s team, Rohit Sharma, and his counterpart from Australia, Pat Cummins, “pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanctions,” the report stated, adding that there was thus no need for official hearings.
Concerns were expressed over the legality of the all-rounder’s low, one-handed grab on day four, when Cameron Green claimed to have caught Gill. However, the catch was questioned due to the fact that it was made with just one hand.
Richard Kettleborough, an officer at the television network, dismissed the idea.
Gill shared a less definite still photograph of the catch on Twitter shortly after stumps, accompanied with two magnifying glasses and a “face palm” emoji. Replays suggested that Green had his fingertips underneath the ball, but Gill’s image was less certain.
According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), Gill’s response constituted “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.”
Gill’s disciplinary record now includes one more point of detention.
