Heavy blow for sa as nortje ruled out of world cup0

Both all-rounder Sisanda Magala and fast bowler Anrich Nortje were ruled out of the Cricket World Cup in India due to injuries, authorities said on Thursday. As a result, South Africa will be without both players for the competition.

All-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo and seamer Lizaad Williams have been called up to fill in. South Africa will begin their campaign against Sri Lanka on October 7.

The loss of Nortje’s exceptional speed is devastating. He had a back problem that prevented him from playing in the latter stages of the team’s recent 3-2 victory against Australia at home.

A knee issue has been a struggle for Magala.

“Andile and Lizaad now have a chance to compete on a global scale,” coach Rob Walter said in a statement released by Cricket South Africa.

“Both athletes participated in our winter programs and played for South Africa versus Australia on the most recent white-ball tour.

“We’re thrilled to have them round out the 15-player World Cup squad, as they offer excellent skill sets.”

Phehlukwayo made his debut in 2016 and has since participated in 76 One-Day Internationals, although his form has seen him come and go from the team. He is well-known for being a versatile player and a potent bottom order batter.

In 2021, Williams made his lone ODI debut against Ireland, taking 1-62 in eight overs. He has participated in two tests and nine Twenty20 games, including one this month against Australia.

Despite making four appearances in the World Cup semifinals, South Africa has not yet won the championship.

The updated South Africa team includes: David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Lizaad Williams, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, and David Miller as captain.
