Griezmann becomes standalone atletico all-time top goalscorer0

On Wednesday, Antoine Griezmann scored against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal to become Atletico Madrid’s all-time solo best goalscorer with 174 goals.

In the first half of an intense derby match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the 32-year-old French attacker turned smartly and fired a low attempt into the far corner to tie the score at 2-2 for Atletico.

Griezmann’s historic evening was spoiled, however, by Real Madrid, who defeated city rivals Atletico 5-3 in a thrilling Super Cup semifinal thanks to a Brahim Diaz goal late in extra time and an own goal by defender Stefan Savic.

In December, Griezmann tied the late Luis Aragones as the club’s greatest scorer with 173 goals with a brace against Getafe in La Liga.

The striker, who Atletico purchased back from Barcelona in 2022, made his debut for the team in 2014 after joining from Real Sociedad. He has since played 368 games for the team in two stints.

Griezmann, who won the 2018 World Cup with France, signed a 120 million euro ($132 million) contract to leave for Barcelona in 2019. However, he struggled with form and returned to Atletico in 2021 on loan.

Once again, under Diego Simeone, he reached his peak in the Spanish city, and Atletico made his comeback permanent for a mere 20 million euros ($22 million).

Griezmann has led Atletico Madrid to 17 goals in 27 games this season.
