On Sunday, the holders Gujarat Titans eliminated Royal Challengers Bangalore from the Indian Premier League with a six-wicket victory. Shubman Gill scored 104 runs without being dismissed, breaking Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored in a century.
As a consequence of the outcome, the five-time champion Mumbai Indians were able to secure the fourth and final position in the play-offs. This came after they defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the day’s opening match.
In the final match of the group stage, Gill’s knock of 52 balls was the deciding factor in Gujarat’s victory, which they achieved with five balls to spare.
After Cameron Green’s match-winning 100 for Mumbai and subsequently Virat Kohli’s 101 not out, Gill hit the winning six to score his second consecutive century and the event’s third of the day. This was the third century of the day overall.
Kohli scored his second hundred in a row and seventh in the IPL to pass Chris Gayle’s six and lead Bangalore to a score of 197-5 in a match that started an hour late in Bengaluru because of rain. Kohli’s century helped drive Bangalore to their current score.
The attempt proved fruitless, and Kohli will have to continue looking for an elusive IPL championship for another year.
In the elimination match the following week, Mumbai will face battle against the Lucknow Super Giants, who on Saturday became the third team to qualify for the play-offs.
The first qualifying match will take place on Tuesday, and it will feature a matchup between table leaders Gujarat and second-placed Chennai Super Kings.
The victor of the first qualifying round will advance directly to the championship match, which will take place in Ahmedabad on May 28, while the loser will face the winner of the elimination round.
Kohli got off to a good start in the opening partnership of 67 runs with captain Faf du Plessis, who scored 28 runs to maintain his position atop the batting list with 730 runs scored.
After making a match-winning 100 in the last game for Bangalore, Kohli had gone behind Du Plessis in the batting list with 639 runs. However, Gill overtook the veteran star to claim second place in the batting list with 674 runs.
Green’s performance as a standout for Mumbai in the first match was highlighted by his first ever Twenty20 century, in which he smashed an unbroken 100 off 47 balls to take his team to victory with two overs to spare.
Green shone out with eight fours and eight sixes, making him a significant purchase for Mumbai in the auction for the price of $2.11 million.
Following Rohit Sharma’s exit from the match, Green continued to press their advantage and formed an undefeated partnership with Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 25, to achieve their eighth victory out of a total of 14 in the group.
Akash Madhwal, a medium-pace bowler, helped set the stage for victory by restricting Hyderabad to a score of 200-5 with statistics of 4-37. This total may have been higher if not for some disciplined bowling.
The worst team in the table of 10 was Hyderabad, headed by Aiden Markram. They received the wooden spoon.
