A Ghanaian lawmaker named Isaac Adongo said he was sorry for saying that England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire’s play on the pitch was like the country’s vice-president, Mahamudu Bawumia, running the economy.

Adongo had said in parliament last year, “He became the biggest threat by tackling Manchester United players and setting up other teams.” Mr. Speaker, Maguire will score for them when you see the other team try to score.

This changed when Adongo praised Maguire as a “transformational footballer” during the 2024 budget debate in the government.

“If you remember last year, I was very quick to compare [vice-president] Mahamudu Bawumia to Harry Maguire,” Adongo stated.

I’m sorry, Mr. Speaker. I meant to say sorry to Harry Maguire. Maguire has turned the corner today… Manchester United now has goals from Harry Maguire.

“Mr Speaker, Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United.”
