In the second and penultimate Women’s ODI in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, a determined Bangladeshi squad lost eight wickets against South Africa despite having checked most of the correct boxes.
The host team, needing 223 runs, reached their target in 45.1 overs with relative ease. Laura Wolvaart, the captain, and Tazmin Brits, the other opener, set the tone by combining for 106 runs in 25 overs to level the series.
Prior to being called in to bat, Bangladesh amassed a respectable 222 for four thanks to opener Fargana Hoque’s 102, which supported the innings until the 50th over, and Fahima Khatun’s fast 46 off 48 balls while batting at number five.

Marizanne Kapp was the most economical of the group, taking two wickets in nine overs at a cost of 2.33.
With her 167-ball innings, which included 11 fours, Fargana became the first touring Bangladeshi woman to reach a century in the format at Senwes Park.
In both the ODI and T20I forms, Fargana has now made three of the four hundreds scored by a woman from Bangladesh.
While they managed to dismiss both South Africa’s openers at 106, the visitors compiled their fourth-highest total in the process. However, new batsmen Anneke Bosch (not out 65) and Sune Luus (47 not out) were just as good, if not more, than the openers.
The series showdown between the two teams takes place on Saturday.
