Reports out on Tuesday said that the Premier League failed in its attempt to stop affiliated teams from moving players on loan during the January transfer window.
The Premier League reportedly didn’t want teams like Newcastle to be able to borrow a player from a club owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Newcastle has been rumoured to want to borrow player Ruben Neves from the Saudi club Al-Hilal.
Because Sandro Tonali was banned for 10 months for gambling violations, Newcastle’s team would be missing a player. Neves would fill that role.
At a meeting of owners in London on Tuesday, 14 of the 20 teams in the Premier League had to vote in favour of the ban.
But it is thought that the vote was only 13–7 in favour of a ban. This means that Newcastle can sign Neves on loan in January.
Eighty percent of Newcastle is owned by PIF. In June, they also bought the Saudi Arabian clubs Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ahli, and Al-Ittihad.
North East United boss Eddie Howe said in November that he was “open to signing anyone if they are good enough” when asked if he would consider adding players from the Gulf State.
Three-time winners Manchester City could borrow players from other City Football Group teams.
The Premier League also took a hit when the teams couldn’t agree to the terms of the so-called “New Deal,” which was a £900 million deal between the league and English Football League clubs.
It is thought that there was no vote at Tuesday’s meeting, even though the Premier League had hoped to approve the deal.
Even after three hours of talking, there is still a problem with the new cost-cutting measures for teams in the Premier League and the EFL.
As a result, the Premier League wants the problem to be fixed before the new independent football governing body is confirmed.
