For the next series against South Africa, Australia has added a dynamic middle-order alternative to their lineup and made a last-minute addition to their ODI team. The young hitter is now eligible to compete in the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Tim David, who was born in Singapore, offers another option in Australia’s middle-order.

Although he hasn’t played in an ODI yet, the 27-year-old has shown promise in the game’s abbreviated version. At a strike rate of 163.41 and an average of 38.28, he has amassed 804 runs.

His most recent performance in the first Twenty20 International against South Africa, when he hit 64 runs off only 28 balls and helped Australia win by 111 runs, caught people’s attention. David joined captain Mitchell Marsh at 77/4 and they had a 97-run partnership off of only 50 balls.

David had a brilliant knock, hitting seven fours and four sixes.

Following the match, Marsh discussed David’s significance to the Australian squad.

“One of Tim’s best qualities is his exceptional composure. He is aware that his contribution to T20 cricket might fluctuate. But we have complete trust in him because of his capacity to win us games, which is why he is on this squad.

“I want him to play every game the way he wants to play because I know it will help us win games. He is an incredible resource for Australian cricket.

The inclusion of David increases the middle-order when usual alternatives are not available. Steve Smith is not available for the South Africa ODIs owing to a wrist injury, while Glenn Maxwell is not available due to a wrist injury and the upcoming birth of his first child.

David now has a chance to shine in the 50-over format thanks to this. Even though David hasn’t played in a List A game in over two years, he still manages an amazing average of 82.77 with a 123.14 strike rate.

The most compelling feature of his finisher is his ability to summon pyrotechnics.

David’s participation, according to Australia selector Tony Dodemaide, gives them an extra option towards the conclusion of the innings.

Tim is already here for the T20 series, so this is a chance to test whether his style of play works well in a one-day format, according to Dodemaide. “In that power role, he will give us an extra option at the end of an inning.”

September 7–17 is when the five-match ODI series will take place.
