On Wednesday, former Barcelona and Brazil defender Dani Alves was officially charged on allegations of sexual assault of a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in December.
His attorney said that the player would not delay the process by appealing against the indictment, and the player has stated that he would not appeal against the indictment.
The court said that she had uncovered proof that the athlete, who is 40 years old and claims that he had consensual intercourse with his accuser, had committed an illegal act.
Alves was taken into custody on January 20 and has been detained in a jail just outside of Barcelona without the possibility of bail. Should he be proven guilty, he may spend anywhere from four to fifteen years behind bars.
“Dani Alves is upset with the narrative of the facts… he disagrees with it,” Alves’ lawyer Cristobal Martell told reporters minutes after his client came before the Barcelona court. Martell was speaking on behalf of Alves, who was represented by Cristobal Martell.
“In addition, he has stated that he will not file an appeal because he wants to move the judicial process along as quickly as possible,” Martell said.
It is now the responsibility of the prosecution to provide the court with official accusations, while the defense will make its claims in written form. After that, a time and place will be decided upon for the commencement of a trial.
