Coach Michel is determined to enjoy Girona’s “historic” La Liga run following Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Valencia and not concentrate about the title chase because his team is “not at that level.”
Cristhian Stuani scored two late goals in five minutes at home to keep Girona tied with Real Madrid for first place with 38 points after 15 games.
“I think it’s important to acknowledge that we’re making history, eh?” “It can’t be normal to have 12 wins in 15 games,” Michel told reporters.
“So we have to enjoy this moment… whatever happens in Madrid-Granada and whatever happens tomorrow at (Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid), what difference does it make if we’ve already made 12 out of 15?
“They are well-deserved numbers, but they belong to a team that fights for everything, and we are not a team that aspires to compete for the league.” We are not there yet.
“It is something that we have to have very clear in our head that it is very difficult to put you at the level of Madrid, Barca and Atletico Madrid,” said the Spaniard.
Girona have never won Spain’s top flight. After the City Football Group purchased a significant share in the club, they finished 10th in 2017-18 and 2022-23.
On December 11, Michel’s team will travel to Barcelona for their next league encounter.
