After the Indian captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, lost her cool both on and off the field after being dissatisfied with the umpire’s decision during the third and decisive One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh last Saturday, it seemed likely that Harmanpreet Kaur would be given a penalty for her behavior.
As a consequence of two different violations of the ICC Code of Conduct, Harmanpreet was given a suspension that will last for the next two international matches.
For Bangladesh, it was a huge moment to beat a team like India for the very first time in the ODI format in the first game, and then to go on to draw the three-match series 1-1, with the final game tied, in dramatic fashion — an outcome that could be regarded as a stepping stone for women’s cricket in the country. In the first game, Bangladesh defeated India for the very first time in the ODI format in the first game.
In spite of Harmanpreet’s appalling behavior both before and after the game, players from Bangladesh expected their competitors, who are among the best teams in international cricket, to show some respect for their efforts.
“We expected appreciation from them and some words of encouragement which would have motivated our players,” the captain of the Bangladeshi team, Nigar Sultana Joty, told The Daily Star. “But they didn’t give us either of those things.”
After overhearing Harmanpreet make a snide remark, Joty and her teammates decided to leave the field in the middle of the post-match picture session with the trophy and the Indian players.
However, the actions that they took do not send a positive message in any way. The two teams were standing for the picture session, and there was no purpose in saying such a thing in front of the players since the players had the right, according to the regulations of the match, to protest to the match referee. When they were not giving respect, it was obviously upsetting to feel that way. As a result, I didn’t see the value in standing there since I have a lot of respect for my teammates, and I just can’t accept it,” Joty said further.
According to Joty, the veteran campaigner Harmanpreet, who has a total of 284 international appearances, should not have carried the situation outside of the field as it merely conveyed a terrible message to the players across the globe who look up to the Indian skipper as a role model. Harmanpreet’s overall number of international appearances is 284.
“Cricket is a game that requires discipline, and most importantly, whatever we do serves as motivation for other people. As a result, we won’t engage in any behavior that sends a negative message to the people who look up to us. Regarding the captain of the India team, whatever transpired during the game, whether it was losing his anger or exhibiting irritation, was natural; nevertheless, it was not appropriate to bring that into the post-match discussion since it was not appropriate. “We had a chance to lose the match, but in the end, we played better cricket and tied the game,” she said.
