Following a request by the 39-year-old, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is set to extend Javier Cabrera’s contract as head coach of the men’s national team for another year with a wage boost.
Cabrera was appointed for a one-year tenure in 2022 before his contract was extended for another year, expiring on December 31, 2023, despite only leading the team to one win and two draws in eight matches.
However, in his second year, the Spaniard led the squad to the semifinals of the SAFF Championship for the first time in 14 years. Cabrera led the team to four wins, five draws, and four loses in 13 international matches during his second year.
According to reports, the Spaniard sought nearly twice his present salary — US 8,000 — in addition to additional perks.
“We are negotiating with his demands and hope to reach an agreement within a week,” BFF vice-president and chairman of the national teams’ committee Kazi Nabil Ahmed said yesterday, adding that they would sign a new one-year contract.
