The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has postponed important matters during the national elections, including evaluating the ODI World Cup debacle, selecting a new national selection panel, and choosing a captain.
The board president, Nazmul Hassan Papon, was running for office, therefore decisions about such significant matters were postponed until after the elections.
However, now that the election has passed, the board has to put an end to the standstill and address the outstanding problems.
The three-person special committee to investigate the World Cup accident was established on November 29 and has not yet released its report.
Regarding the national team’s leadership status, there is also considerable uncertainty.
Najmul Hossain Shanto assumed captaincy when regular captain Shakib Al Hasan, who also participated in the elections, missed consecutive home and away series against New Zealand due to injuries.
Under Shanto’s leadership, Bangladesh went on to defeat the hosts in their first ODI and T20I, when the 25-year-old shown tremendous potential as a leader.
Jalal Yunus, the chairman of BCB’s cricket operations, had previously said before to the polls that the board will make a decision about the leadership after conferring with the all-round player.
On December 31, 2023, the terms of the national selection panel including Abdur Razzaq, Habibul Bashar, and Minhajul Abedin came to an end.
The next selection panel must be finalized by the board, and Papon had intimated to the public that there would be some changes.
Jalal said that these topics would be addressed in the next board meeting, which is anticipated to happen later this month based on sources, now that the election has concluded.
Sunday marked the conclusion of the elections, and I believe it will take a few more days for things to calm down. We are trying to finalize the date for the next board meeting and we have a few agendas in our possession,” Jalal said to The Daily Star yesterday.
