Jamal Musiala’s goal in the 89th minute was the difference in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 victory against Cologne on the last day of the Bundesliga on Saturday. This victory allowed Bayern Munich to wrest the trophy away from bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund and win their 11th straight Bundesliga championship.
Dortmund was in first place heading into the last game of the season but was unable to get a victory, finishing with a score of 2-2 against Mainz 05 on the road. This result allowed Bayern to take the lead in the most competitive league race in recent memory.
Dortmund’s hopes of winning their first league trophy since 2012 were dashed when they were down 2-0 to Mainz early on before fighting back to draw 2-2; however, they needed a win to become champions. Bayern, on the other hand, were celebrating what turned out to be an unexpected victory in the season’s final game.
Bayern finished in first place with 71 points, one point ahead of Dortmund in goal differential. RB Leipzig and sensational Union Berlin are now ranked third and fourth, respectively, and will also participate in the Champions League the following year.
Hertha Berlin and Schalke 04 have been demoted to the 2. Bundesliga, while VfB Stuttgart will participate in the relegation playoff.
In the first few minutes of the game, Kingsley Coman calmed Bayern’s jitters and gave them the lead with a magnificently curled strike that found its way into the top corner.
The Bavarians knew they were now in the lead as Dortmund finished the first half behind, so they managed the game without taking too many risks and dominated the first half.
Although Leroy Sane scored a goal shortly before halftime, the goal did not count because the video assistant referee ruled that he had committed a handball.
Cologne got a penalty in the 80th minute, and Dejan Ljubicic scored the equalizer by sending the goalie the wrong way to make the Bayern club leaders worried as they anxiously checked their mobile phones for the result in Dortmund.
Sane believed that he had missed the opportunity to deliver his team the championship when he failed to beat the Cologne keeper in the 88th minute, but Musiala did it perfectly a minute later, curving a low drive into the far post in the rollercoaster season ending. Sane thought that he had missed the chance to hand his side the trophy.
