Taijul Islam took a 10-wicket haul as Bangladesh won their first home Test against New Zealand by 150 runs on the fifth day of the first Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today.
Taijul, who had four wickets in the first innings, put the last nail in New Zealand’s coffin by catching Ish Sodhi (22) at silly point to dismiss the visitors for 181.
Taijul grabbed two of the final three wickets on the day, while Nayeem Hasan took the other.
Bangladesh had already surrendered a seven-run advantage in the first innings. The Tigers set a formidable 332-run mark thanks to stand-in skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto’s century and two fifties from Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehedi Hasan Miraz.
By the end of the fourth day, Bangladesh had New Zealand on the ropes, having reduced them to 113-7.
It took the hosts less than 90 minutes in the morning session to win.
As a result, Bangladesh has begun the third cycle of the ICC Test Championship with a win. This is also their second win in the competition, with the first occurring in the second cycle at Mount Maunganui against the same opponents in 2021.
With the win, Bangladesh also takes a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.
The next Test will take held in Dhaka on December 6th.

Taijul Islam finished Tim Southee’s counter-attacking knock for his 12th five-wicket haul in Tests, and Bangladesh are now one wicket away from winning the first Test on Day five at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Southee, who scored 34 off 24 balls, attempted to draw a short delivery from Taijul but only got it as far as Zakir Hasan.
Bangladesh now just needs one wicket to defeat New Zealand in their first home Test.
