Australia and England were fined 50 percent of their match fees by the International Cricket Council on Wednesday for sluggish over rates during an otherwise enthralling Ashes opener at Edgbaston.

The governing body of cricket stated that each team had been deducted two World Test Championship points for sluggish play.

“Captains Pat Cummins and Ben Stokes pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for formal hearings,” the International Criminal Court said in a statement.

England’s two-wicket loss in the first Ashes Test marked a thrilling beginning to the latest installment of cricket’s greatest rivalry.

On Tuesday’s final day, a partnership of 55 between Australia’s captain Cummins and spinner Nathan Lyon proved decisive as the tourists pursued a target of 281.

This was only England’s third loss in 14 Tests since captain Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum joined forces last year.

The second Ashes Test will begin on June 28 at Lords.
