Surprise delivery Girona were beaten to a 1-1 draw at home by Athletic Bilbao on Monday, preventing them from resuming their La Liga lead.

Winger Viktor Tsygankov put the hosts ahead 10 minutes after halftime, but Inaki Williams equalised 12 minutes later to earn the visitors a point.

Girona now trails league leaders Real Madrid on goal difference after dropping points for the third time this season, while Athletic moved up to fifth place.

Athletic dominated the first half, and their greatest chance belonged to Gorka Guruzeta, who fired straight at Girona custodian Paulo Gazzaniga.

Girona had early chances of their own, notably an Aleix Garcia shot that flew over the crossbar, but they were unable to find the rhythm that they have found so frequently this season.

Tsygankov rifled home after the interval to break the deadlock.

Williams, who started on the opposite wing as his brother Nico, equalised on a counter-attack from Athletic’s own box.

The wide winger finished easily for his sixth league goal of the season as the Basques sought their third consecutive victory.

With 10 minutes remaining, Inaki Williams came close to scoring as he cut in from the left, but Gazzaniga parried his attempt.

Inaki Williams was substituted by Adu Ares in the final minute of normal time, but both teams were forced to settle for a point.

Rodrygo scored twice in Real Madrid’s 3-0 triumph over Cadiz on Sunday.

Madrid leads fourth-placed Barcelona by four points after a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
