Carlo Ancelotti will stand trial for tax theft. The Real Madrid coach is accused of not telling the Spanish tax office about money he made from image rights in 2014.
In a court document seen by AFP on Wednesday, a judge in Spain said that Ancelotti had “acknowledged” the acts that cost the country’s government 386,361 euros ($428,000).
In her findings, the judge said, “It is clear that there are enough signs to think that the actions under investigation could be an alleged crime against the public treasury.”
The Spanish tax office says that during the 2014 tax year, Ancelotti reported his income as the coach of Real Madrid, but not any income from his image rights or other sources.
The court official threw out a similar case about Ancelotti’s 2015 tax return, which he made while living in the UK for tax purposes.
The 64-year-old Italian took over Real Madrid in 2013. He left in May 2015 and was hired by Bayern Munich the next year.
Ancelotti went on to lead Napoli and Everton before going back to Real Madrid in 2021, where he has one year left on his deal.
The union of Brazil said earlier in July that the experienced coach has agreed to lead the national team starting in June 2024.
