During Liverpool’s weekend victory over Brentford 1-0 in the Premier League, Mohamed Salah scored his 100th goal at Anfield to become the first player in club history to score in nine consecutive home games at Anfield.
The victory, along with Manchester United’s defeat at the hands of West Ham, kept the Reds’ prospects of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League the following season alive.
At West Ham, Algerian Said Benrahma scored the game’s lone goal after goalkeeper David De Gea committed an error that opened the door for him to do so.
The following players from Africa who are making headlines in major European leagues are highlighted by AFP Sport:
ENGLAND
MOHAMED SALAH, who hails from Liverpool
The Egyptian, who has been named African Footballer of the Year twice, hammered home the ball at the second attempt from Virgil van Dijk’s header to record his 30th goal of the season in all competitions. The goal brought the Egyptian closer to tying his career high of 32 goals scored in a single season.
Manchester City’s RIYAD MAHREZ is the player.
Ilkay Gundogan was the scorer for both of City’s goals in their 2-1 victory against Leeds, which brought the reigning champions one step closer to reclaiming their crown. Mahrez was the creator for both of City’s goals. Two times, the Algerian cut inside off the right flank and found Gundogan with precisely weighted passes that he used to score from the edge of the box.
SAID BENRAHMA (West Ham)
As a result of West Ham’s 1-0 victory against Manchester United, the club’s continued participation in the Premier League is almost assured. Benrahma scored the game’s only goal. But the Algerian had De Gea to thank for his 10th goal of the season as the Spanish goalkeeper somehow allowed a weak effort from a distance to go by him and into the back of the net.
ITALY
VICTOR OSIMHEN (Napoli)
The Nigerian international finished the finest season of his career by smashing home the penalty — his 23rd goal in Serie A this season — which gave Napoli a 1-0 win over Fiorentina in his team’s first home match since being named Italian champions for the first time in 33 years. This victory earned Napoli their first home win after being crowned Italian champions for the first time in 33 years. Osimhen had scored the goal that secured the championship against Udinese midweek, and he gave his celebrating supporters more cause to celebrate with a strike that makes him the top scoring African player in the history of Serie A. This makes him the most scoring African player in the history of Serie A, passing the Liberian icon George Weah.
GERMANY
SEBASTIEN HALLER (Borussia Dortmund)
The international player from Ivory Coast scored the second goal for Borussia Dortmund in their 6-0 thumping of Wolfsburg. In the 28th minute, Haller scored the game-winning goal for Dortmund by converting a low cross from Karim Adeyemi. With this victory, Dortmund kept their championship aspirations alive and remained within one point of the leaders, Bayern Munich. Due to a diagnosis of testicular cancer, Haller was sidelined for the first half of the season. Since making his comeback in February, Haller has been able to score five goals for the team.
ILHAS BEBOU (Hoffenheim)
The goal scored by the Togo striker was an easy tap-in, and it helped his team defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1, moving them a significant distance away from the relegation zone in the Bundesliga. Hoffenheim came out fighting with a magnificent performance in the first half, and Bebou scored a goal by capitalizing on a cross from Angelino to increase the score 3-0 just before the half-time break. This goal brought Bebou’s total for the season to five goals.
FRANCE
SEKO FOFANA (Lens)
The international midfielder from Ivory Coast started the score to put Lens ahead in a pivotal Ligue 1 match against Marseille. Shortly after, the Belgian forward Lois Openda added a second goal for the team from northern France. Lens won the match 2-1. Even though Dimitri Payet scored a late consolation goal for Marseille, Lens moved into second position behind Paris Saint-Germain thanks to their 2-1 victory. They are now two points clear of their defeated southern competitors after this match.
