Yesterday, at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla, Abahani finished the 2022-23 season with a victory over Azampur FC by a score of 1-0.
The game was part of the Bangladesh Premier League.
It was the sixth time since the beginning of the professional football league in 2007 that Abahani did not win a trophy in top-flight play. Despite being the most successful football organization in the nation, Abahani finished the season without a trophy.
Yesterday, in the 70th minute, Nabib Newaj Jibon scored the game-winning goal, which assisted the Sky Blues in finishing in second place in the BPL standings with 40 points after playing in 20 matches.
Abahani, who had previously won six professional league championships, have won three domestic crowns since the Kings franchise was founded in 2018. After defeating Kings in the Federation Cup in 2018, Abahani went on to win both the Federation Cup and the Independence Cup in the previous season.
This season, Abahani was defeated in the final of the Federation Cup by their bitter rivals Mohammedan, while they were eliminated in the semifinals of the Independence Cup.
It’s interesting to note that the disparity in power between Kings and Abahani has grown in recent years.
In the 2018–19 BPL season, Abahani came in second place, just five points behind the Kings, who went on to win the league. However, in the 2021–22 and 2022–23 seasons, Abahani finished third and fourth, respectively, in the league.
