Zimbabwe defeated the United States of America in the Cricket World Cup qualifiers on Monday by a score of 304 runs, which is the second largest victory margin in terms of runs in the history of one-day internationals.
Sean Williams blasted 174 off 101 balls to lead the way for Zimbabwe.
After setting a new record for their best one-day total with a magnificent 408-6 from 50 overs, the hosts of the tournament, Zimbabwe, bowled out the United States for only 104 runs to secure a fourth consecutive victory in Group A.
They came quite close to surpassing the record for the largest margin of victory in a one-day international, which was achieved at the beginning of the year in Thiruvananthapuram when India defeated Sri Lanka by 317 runs.
When the stand-in captain came at the crease, wicketkeeper Joylord Gumbie hit a solid 78 at the top of the order, but Williams played the leading role as Zimbabwe pushed on the gas once the stand-in captain was in position.
Sikandar Raza scored 48 runs off of 27 balls, and Ryan Burl hammered 47 runs off of only 16 deliveries before Williams was caught in the deep in the last over of the innings. Williams had smashed 21 fours and five sixes when he was out.
The poor performance of the Americans was accentuated by the fact that just three of their batsmen reached double digits. Richard Ngarava and Raza both got two wickets, and the Americans also committed three run outs.
