Olga Carmona, who scored the only goal in Spain’s 1-0 win over England in the Women’s World Cup final, found out that her father had died after the game, the Spanish federation (RFEF) said Sunday.

The defender, who is 23 years old, scored the game’s only goal in Sydney, which helped La Roja win the event for the first time in their history. The Spanish union said in a statement that it was very sad to have to tell people that Olga Carmona’s father had died.

“The soccer player found out about the bad news after the World Cup final.

“In this time of great pain, we send Olga and her family our most sincere hugs. We love you, Olga, and you have a place in the history of Spanish sport.”

Carmona, a player for Real Madrid, gave her goal to the late mother of one of her best friends by wearing a “Merchi”-written undershirt.

“I want to say that this win is for the mother of one of my best friends, who died recently,” Carmona told Spanish state station La 1 soon after the game ended.
