England through to world cup quarter-finals after beating nigeria in shootout0

On Monday, Chloe Kelly scored the winning penalty kick in a shootout against Nigeria in the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup. The game had ended in a 0-0 draw after 120 nerve-wracking minutes.

Beth England, Rachel Daly, and Alex Greenwood also scored for the European winners, who had a player sent off in regular time.

After England’s forward Lauren James, who had scored three goals in the group stage and was their top scorer, was sent off in the 87th minute for an angry kick on Michelle Alonzi’s back after the two got mixed up, England had to play extra time with only 10 players.

On Saturday, the fourth-ranked English team will play either Jamaica or Colombia in the quarterfinals in Sydney.
