Uruguay took the lead through defender Ronald Araujo’s goal in the 41st minute. However, Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez scored on the break in the 87th minute to end a tough match at the Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires.

Argentina lost for the first time since Saudi Arabia beat them 2-1 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Lionel Messi and his team had not lost since the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

With 12 points from five games, Argentina is still in first place, having won all four of their opening qualifiers. With 10 points, Uruguay is now in second place after their win.
