Manchester City beat Newcastle United 1-0 in their first home game of the new Premier League season thanks to a great goal from midfielder Julian Alvarez. The game came at the end of a night of celebrations at the Etihad Stadium for last season’s treble.
Before the game started, the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup trophies were all on the field. After that, City completely dominated Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, which hurt their chances of winning the title early in the season.
Kevin De Bruyne was hurt, so Pep Guardiola put Phil Foden in his place. The 23-year-old England international gave a man-of-the-match showing as he took on the job of making chances for the winners.
In the first 30 minutes, the home team had most of the ball. In the 31st minute, Alvarez broke the tie when Foden found him on the edge of the box and sent a strong shot past Nick Pope and into the net.
In the second half, Newcastle picked up the pace, but it was City that had the better chances. Erling Haaland, City’s scorer, seemed out of sorts because he missed a few chances that Foden made for him.
In the last 15 minutes, the away team was finally able to put some pressure on the home team, but despite playing better offense, they still had trouble getting goals on goal.
Change out Callum Wilson lost a great chance to start a counterattack when he stole the ball from Rodri in center. He couldn’t find a way to get to the goal, and when Harvey Barnes finally got a shot off, it didn’t do much to bother Ederson.
Foden’s late shot across goal almost gave City a second win, and his team held on for back-to-back league wins to start the season and make it 17 home wins in all competitions.
In a TV interview, Foden said of his creator role, “I like playing in there. I hope I can get more games there in the future and show people what I can do.”
“The boss talked to me a few times and told me to be patient. He said, ‘You always train well and work hard, and you’ll get your chances in the future.’ Now that I’m living up to his words, I’m more than happy.
After 90 minutes, Newcastle’s coach Eddie Howe didn’t have much to say about how his team played.
“We knew it would be a tough game, and it was. They are the best. We did our best to carry out our plan, and the second half was better, but when it came down to it, we weren’t good enough,” he told TNT.Manchester City beat Newcastle United 1-0 in their first home game of the new Premier League season thanks to a great goal from midfielder Julian Alvarez.
